Hetton Colliery Railway

In the early 19th century, coal, steam and machines transformed Britain. It was an age of technological innovation, hard graft and pushing the boundaries  - epitomised by the birth of the railways.

One of the worlds first was the Hetton Colliery Railway, designed by giant of the industrial age George Stephenson and opened in 1822.

The bicentenary of the Hetton Railway takes place in 2022 and a local community group has been established to ensure that this occasion doesn't pass unnoticed.
