Roots and Shoots Project
The Environmental, Green and Sustainable young people's group raised the topic of local growing at the October 2030 Shadow Board, they have now explored examples of local growing projects across the City including the Change4Life Roots and Shoots programme.
Common Ground is a community-based gardening project working with sites across Sunderland to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of vulnerable residents in the city. The idea is to bring people from different walks of life together to share skills, experiences and cultures through gardening, horticulture, food, cooking and social interaction.
SARA Southwick Community Orchard

Electric RCV Trial
Sunderland City Council are currently undergoing a 24-month trial for the city's first electric Refuse Collection Vehicle (RCV) to help lower CO2 emissions from the transportation of waste. Find out more here.
North East Community Forest
Sunderland City Council and partners (the Woodland Trust, the Forestry Commission as well as Gateshead Council, Newcastle City Council, South Tyneside Council, North Tyneside Council and Durham County Council), recently submitted a successful bid to England Community Forests and DEFRA to become a prospective community forest. The North East Community Forest partnership will plant 500 hectares deliverable by 2025. Find out more here.

Electric Vehicle Mobility Hub
Sunderland City Council are working to create a new one-stop 'mobility hub', which promotes sustainable travel. This will initially be for council staff, although it is hoped this will be rolled out on a larger scale in the future. Find out more here.
Sunderland Street Lighting
Sunderland City Council have completed the citywide rollout of LED street lighting, and are now working to convert traffic signals and street-lit signs. This will help to deliver energy, financial and carbon savings. Find out more here.
