Waste and Recycling Visitor Education Centre
The service is provided through the South Tyne and Wear Waste Management Partnership (STWWMP) in which the council owns the Centre and the facility is managed by SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK Ltd and Groundwork North East & Cumbria provide a full time Education Coordinator.
The Centre provides a community service to deliver education around the 3R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and waste management to all residents in Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland. It aims to introduce sustainable waste management practices across STWWMP households, encouraging residents to think about the amount of waste that they produce, and help them to become more responsible recyclers.
The Centre acts as the hub for the delivery of a community and schools' education and engagement programme, which includes a range of waste awareness and reuse/recycling activities with local community and schools' groups. These take place both within the Centre itself and through outreach work and activities held within local community settings, which can be tailored to fit individual or curriculum requirements. The Centre's outreach is via both face-to-face engagement and tours of the site, and through online workshops and initiatives which offer a flexible service and connection according to specific organizational needs.
