Sunderland Electric Vehicle Roadmap

Sunderland City Council's Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy Roadmap is our plan to support the city's transition to EVs.

The strategy aims to:

  • Ensure that Sunderland meets its targets for EV infrastructure and uptake laid out in our City Plan 2024-2035 and our Low Carbon Action Plan July 2022.
  • Create a robust network of EV charging points, for all residents, businesses, and visitors, adapting to local needs and technology advancements.
  • Supports Sunderland's goals of reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality by promoting zero-emission vehicles.

  • Focuses on attracting funding and private investment for infrastructure development.

Fleet

The Council have installed several 7kW fast charging units at office and depot locations to enable overnight charging for a growing fleet of Nissan env200 vans.

The council secured £3.0m ERDF funding to provide a range of charge-point infrastructure and PV solar panel installation at both Parsons depot and Jack Crawford House.  The fleet depot at Parsons in Washington incorporates an EV Hub with a range of charging infrastructure along with PV solar panel installation and battery storage.

Taxi charging

Sunderland was part of a successful regional bid to government to secure the installation of a rapid charging facility focused on ULEV Taxi's.  The ULEV Taxi Scheme funding enabled the provision of a rapid charging unit in Station Road car park, Houghton-le-Spring.  This location complements other rapid charging sites installed in the city.  The bid was supported by both the Sunderland Hackney Carriage Operator's Association and the Private Hire Association.
