Southwick Green

Southwick Green

In November 2020, volunteers from Southwick Village Green Preservation Society (SVGPS) and Southwick Altogether Raising Aspirations planted bulbs on Southwick Green following the removal of several bushes.

The flowers were welcomed and appreciated by the local community and businesses as the Green had been in decline for several years and was looking tired and unloved. The summer 2021 plants were also a huge success, which inspired the group to start working in other areas of the Green, including the bark area behind the Green Bean Café.

Bulbs were planted in this area by the local community including SVGPS, businesses, schools, nurseries and residents from local sheltered housing schemes. The group have also installed two benches and four planters which were donated by Sunderland City Council in the 'Bull Ring' area of Southwick Green as this area is the centre of Southwick Green but felt like a route through the Green, rather than somewhere nice to sit and enjoy.

Improvements were made to 'West End' of Southwick Green following instances of cars and vans parking on the pedestrian areas and driving over the Green to avoid the one-way system.

Volunteers work on Southwick Green throughout the year and undertake tasks including dead heading, watering, grass edging/ cutting and planting.

SVGPS researched, designed and fundraised several blue heritage plaques and interpretation panels to celebrate Southwick's rich history.

These are located throughout Southwick Green and celebrate war heroes, sport, people and history which adds to the beautiful flowers on the Green.
