North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care System (ICS)

Dr Neil O'Brien, Chief Officer, NHS Sunderland Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said: "Climate change brings new challenges, both in direct effects to our healthcare services, but also to patient health. Examples in recent years include heat waves, air pollution, prolonged periods of cold, floods and droughts. As an NHS organisation, and as a spender of public funds, NHS Sunderland CCG have an obligation to work in a way that has a positive effect on the communities we serve, which includes the efficient use of natural resources to help build healthy, resilient communities.

The CCG acknowledges its responsibility towards reducing our carbon emissions and creating health services that are environmentally sustainable in the future. To help achieve this, the CCG has created a Green Plan that informs our efforts to help reduce the overall carbon footprint of the NHS. We are proud to support the city-wide approach set out in the Low Carbon Framework so that collectively we can achieve more."
