GET SET FOR A SCRANTASTIC WEEKEND

The free Scrantastic Food Festival is returning to Houghton-le-Spring this weekend bringing celebrity chefs, tasty treats, and family fun.

There's something on the menu for everybody. This Morning's Phil Vickery will be giving a live cookery demonstration (11.30am Sunday), where visitors can learn how to make a Spanish chicken and chorizo dish and some tasty crab cakes.

TV chef and presenter Rosemary Shrager will be demonstrating how to make Pad Thai, beef salad and a seabream dish (12.30pm and 2.30pm Saturday).

The Great British Bake Off's Laura Adlington will be on hand with the sweet treats, making brownies and an extra special jubilee pudding (11.30am and 1.45pm Saturday).

CBBC's Gastronaut Stefan Gates will be showcasing an edible science spectacular and stunts to transform food and science into an unforgettable adventure. He will be bringing two different shows to Scrantastic; 'F*rtology' - an edible scientific adventure (10.30am Saturday and Sunday and 3pm Sunday) and 'The Outrageous Gastonaut Food Stunt Show' (3.30pm on Saturday and 12.45pm Sunday).

Children will be able to make their own pizzas with Artventures, and magical characters will be visiting direct from the Casita ready to greet families with a friendly 'Hola'. Live music, stilt walkers and Active Sunderland family games promise to make Scrantastic fantastic.

A food market on The Broadway will be home to a variety of stalls offering fresh produce from local traders, street food and specialty food and drinks.

Local businesses such as Fat Hippo, Acropolis Street Food and Redhead's Mac n Cheese will be serving up delicious street food across the weekend and local producers like Simply Cheescake, The Yolker and Weardale Cheese will satisfy the appetites of the shoppers.

Additional stalls selling jewellery, candles, garden sculptures and dog treats will complete the appetizing two-day offer.

Councillor Linda Williams, Portfolio Holder for Vibrant City at Sunderland City Council said: "There really is something for everybody at Scrantastic Food Festival this year, from fantastic cookery demonstrations to family fun and delicious local food, visitors will be well catered for. The festival is free entry and all cooking demos, entertainment and games are free too!"

"Make sure you pay Scrantastic a visit on 28 and 29 May as this is an event not to be missed."
