England's Red Roses take on the USA in the Women's Rugby World Cup opening match.

Sunderland's iconic 49,000-capacity Stadium of Light is set to host the opening match of the Women's Rugby World Cup 2025.

On Friday 22 August, the world's number one ranked team, England's Red Roses, will take the field in what promises to be an era-defining event. Adding to the excitement, chart-topping star Anne-Marie will headline the opening ceremony, delivering an unforgettable live performance to kick off the tournament in style.

To make the occasion even more special, a fan village will take place on the day before and the day of the match. It opens at 4pm on Thursday 21 August, featuring a line up of female led musicians, through until 10pm that night. The evening will begin with a panel discussion on women in sport and music followed by a stage programme curated by Music City, featuring:

  • Cortney Dixon - 5.30 - 6 pm
  • Shannon Pearl - 6.20 - 7 pm
  • Lottie Willis 7.20 - 8 pm
  • Kay Greyson 8.20 - 9 pm
  • Du Blonde 9.20 - 10.00 pm

Fans can sample delicious food from a range of vendors, and take part in fun rugby-themed activities and entertainment for all ages. Visitors to the free Fan Village can also look forward to live music throughout the Friday 22 August with tribute performances from:

  • Rock DJ
  • Mac Busted
  • Re-Take That
  • Royal Rhapsody
  • The Rock Choir

Ahead of the game, there'll also be a colourful community fan parade, accompanied by live music and street performers, leading fans on the short walk across to the Stadium of Light for the match.

Following the big match, the day will end with a spectacular firework display over the river at approximately 10.15 pm. While it will be possible to see the fireworks from both sides of the river, the best place to see them is from the Fan Village in Keel Square.

The 2025 tournament marks the first time the Women's Rugby World Cup will be expanded to include 16 teams and will be hosted across eight venues and cities throughout England. This new format ensures the tournament is the most accessible ever, giving fans across the country a chance to engage with and support the stars of the women's game over a five-week schedule.

The Women's Rugby World Cup promises compelling competition, unstoppable athletes, and unforgettable moments, with prices starting from just £10 (adult tickets) and £5 (children tickets) for the opening match. We want fans to bring their unstoppable energy to the biggest celebration of women's rugby, family, and togetherness of 2025.
