Leading authors to speak at Sunderland events
9 September, 2025

A series of talks with acclaimed authors are taking place across Sunderland over the coming months.
The talks will be happening in Houghton, Washington and Sunderland city centre, giving people the chance to hear from a number of celebrated writers.
Author Lucy Roth will be discussing her newly released book, When Sally Killed Harry, at the Creative Smart City Hub @ Washington Library on Wednesday 24 September at 6.30pm.
She will be discussing the dark, humorous new thriller that marks a change in genre from her previous work, with Lucy introducing Sally, a serial killer with a difference.
In October, three Northern writers - Christy Ducker, Harry Man and David Mark - will discuss home and the places that matter to them using short readings from a range of Royal Literary Fund writers as a springboard for discussion.
The conversation will give a unique insight into how writers think, and the audience will be invited to contribute through a Q&A session. The event will take place at City Library @ Museum and Winter Gardens on Wednesday 8 October at 5.30pm.
The Creative Smart City Hub @ Houghton Library will be hosting a conversation with author Karen Powell about her historical novel, Fifteen Wild Decembers, on Thursday 27 November at 6.30pm.
The book is a creative re-imagining of the short life of Emily Brontë, one of England's greatest writers.
Cllr Beth Jones, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Tourism at Sunderland City Council, said: "These events will give the opportunity for people in different parts of the city to hear from established and award-winning authors in different parts of the city.
"I'm sure the sessions will be entertaining and inspiring for all those who attend - it's great to have these events around the city for people from across our communities."
The programme is being delivered by Culture House Sunderland, a multi-purpose cultural venue that will sit at the heart of Riverside Sunderland.
Culture House Sunderland aims to create a living room in the heart of the city where everyone feels welcome and loves to spend time. The venue will be home to the City Library, and will be packed with interactive, digital, educational features, with a year-round programme of things to do and see.
All the events are priced at £3 and are available to book at: www.culturehousesunderland.co.uk/events.
