Heritage Open Days in Sunderland 2025

9 September, 2025

Museum

A programme of free events celebrating Sunderland's rich history is about to get underway as part of this year's Heritage Open Days, England's largest festival of history and culture.

The festival is about to get into in full swing, with free events running across the city's footprint from 12 - 21 September.

The theme for Heritage Open Days 2025 is "Architecture," and focuses on how we've designed and built the world around us.

Look out for a brand-new illustrated talk exploring the rich architectural heritage of Sunderland at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens where you can discover the fascinating history behind the city's finest structures, from grand public buildings to the fantastical creations of Frank Caws and Benjamin Simpson, and join Peter and Hillary Turton on a short walk around the East End of Sunderland and see the architectural gems still remaining in the area. These include the first purpose-built masonic lodge in the world, the original Trafalgar Square and buildings.
