"Sunderland Untold" will bring to life the unique characteristics and tales of Mackems, compiling scores of testimonials that celebrate the city and its people.  Whether they're born in Sunderland or adopted Mackems - the people of Sunderland are known for their warmth, as well as their welcoming, hard-working, generous, ambitious and proud nature, and these are the qualities the project is spotlighting.

A selection of stories have already been shared on social media, with more to follow, and the videos captured will also appear at a digital exhibition in Culture House, which stands at the heart of the transforming Riverside Sunderland and will open in 2026, as well as finding a permanent home in the city's archives, which preserve local history and will be held in the multi-million-pound cultural venue.

Louise Bassett is chief executive of housing association Gentoo, which provides housing for more than 60,000 Sunderland residents, and is also bringing together a group of Sunderland representatives aiming to create stronger communities in the city.  She said: "We see, day-in day-out, the inspiring, community-focused and warm-hearted people who call Sunderland home, so capturing their spirit on camera and showcasing the unique traits that make our residents so special is such a wonderful idea.

"Now more than ever, it's important that we come together as communities. That we support each other. That we create a sense of connection with our neighbours. This is one way of strengthening those connections and bringing people together."

With social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, Sunderland Untold videos will include everything from stories of residents' lives, heartfelt memories that link different people and areas across the city, or testimonials from funny or inspiring people who deserve to be celebrated.  The stories aren't all remarkable, but all are authentic, optimistic and help to tell the tale of Sunderland - past, present and future.

Councillor Beth Jones, cabinet member for communities, culture and tourism at Sunderland City Council, said:  "This is a wonderful way of celebrating the people who make Sunderland such a unique and special place, and it is absolutely right that these fabulous testimonies should be showcased in Culture House when it opens.

"Sunderland's culture is our shared way of life.  It's what makes Sunderland, Sunderland.  It's what makes Mackems, Mackems. Culture is for everyone and it will be brought to life in Culture House, a space where we will celebrate what's ours. Our heritage, our hopes, our bright future and our fantastic people.  I'm looking forward to seeing Sunderland's brilliant people share their stories in a building that I think residents will really take into their heart when it opens."
