Wear Moving

Wear Moving

Our Wear Moving programme aims to get more people walking and cycling in the Southwick and Redhill areas of Sunderland.

The programme has been designed to improve health and wellbeing, promote active travel, give families the confidence to participate in cycling, and reduce carbon emissions through enhanced active travel options.

The project is coordinated by Sunderland Young People's Bike Project (SYPBP) and Sunderland Community Action Group (SCAG), to promote health and fitness, reduce social isolation, and improve mental health and wellbeing. It will also aim to give people the opportunity to learn new skills, gain confidence and help reduce their carbon footprint.

The project also examines how health professionals and others can link people with cycling and walking programmes to improve their health, with a number of routes to referral via GP surgeries, link workers, self-referrals and other community-based organisations.

Fully funded sessions on offer through the Wear Moving programme will include cycle training, guided bike rides and walks, and bike maintenance classes.

There are fun activities for families to get involved in, find out more and book a session below:

I asked for recommendations a while back for a place to teach my 5-year-old son how to ride his bike. Several people suggested Sunderland Young People's Bike Project, so I booked with them. Initially, Joe showed little interest in learning to ride. However, within just 20 minutes of instruction, Joe's confidence soared. Without stabilizers, he was riding his bike with ease. The patience and skill of the instructors were fantastic. We plan to continue attending to further boost Joe's confidence. I can't believe that we started the day with Joe unable to ride his bike and ended it with him eagerly wanting to ride again. What a fantastic initiative! I highly recommend Sunderland Young People's Bike Project.

The team at the adult cycle class were fantastic. They were patient and encouraging, and I learned many new skills. I gained the confidence I needed, and I'm already putting these skills into practice!

Sunderland Young People's Bike Project is an excellent service. Our eldest has dyspraxia and had struggled immensely in the past. The team running the session were incredibly patient, and my son is absolutely over the moon that he can now ride a bike!

Our 8-year-old was initially very reluctant to ride a bike, insisting she didn't mind if she never learned. However, halfway through her session with Sunderland Young People's Bike Project, she had a breakthrough. By the end of the sessions, she had mastered it and is now very proud of herself, as are my husband and me. She went out to the park later that day and the next day to get some more practice in. We are now in the process of purchasing a new bike for her. She even suggested that my husband and I get bikes too so we can go out as a family. I am so thankful for the team who delivered the session for my daughter; you did such a great job, and we're very grateful!
